How IRCTC PNR Generates When You Book a Ticket ?

Travel agent of CRS (Computer Reservation System) is responsible to generate your PNR number. Whenever you book a ticket, a request goes to the CRS and immediately travel agent (A virtual person) generates a PNR with valid Status of your booked ticket.

In reality CRS generates a unique encoded PNR Number first which can only be read by travel agent after that travel agent converts this encoded PNR into readable format which can be read by human. A PNR number is always link to only one single ticket. In other words A ticket always holds the unique PNR number always, two separate tickets can never be have same PNR.

What is Airline/Flight PNR Status ?

Flight PNR Status is also same as Railway. But there is difference in logic/algorithm to generate the PNR at the time of booking of a ticket. The number of digits in PNR Number can be different from airline to airline.

PNR allows passenger to check their booked ticket information, entered personal details, helps to track the IRCTC PNR Status.

What All Are the Information Required to Generate the PNR ?

PNR can only be generated by CRS if following details were entered:

  1. Name of the passengers.
  2. Contact details of travel agency if you have taken agent help to book the ticket.
  3. Your personal details like age, sex, mob number etc.
  4. Name of the consultant who provides the information about trains, if any.

Where to find PNR number on ticket?

PNR number is always mentioned on upper left corner of the ticket booked from railway station counter. If you have booked the ticket online or e ticket then you can find it in e ticket printout and you can do pnr status print e ticket also. There is separate row for mentioning the PNR number.

History of Indian Railway PNR

First train was run from Mumbai to Thane in 1853. During that time the Indian Railway was just started and there were no allocation of PNR number for individual Tickets. People just had booked the ticket from railway station and they got the paper receipt. This receipt was only the proof that they have booked a ticket and during entire journey time they had to carry this receipt because at the destination they had to show the receipt to the receipt checker. There were no TC or ticket checker inside the train.

As a result very soon Indian Railways gradually developed in few years and improved their services. Today there are uncountable trains being run in Indian Railways including normal Passenger trains to Luxury trains but there is a lot of difference in fare on ticket.

Below are the list of all the types of trains begin run today:

IRCTC Passenger trains: There are two type of passenger trains Slow and passenger trains. Basically passenger trains run for small distance. The difference between Slow passenger train and Fast passenger train is slow passenger train stops at every station but fast passenger train stops at only important stations.

Metro Special Trains: These trains are running only in few metro cities like Delhi, Calcutta. These trains are basically for local cities station and runs at very fast speed.

Express & Super-fast Trains: These trains are very fast and runs between long distance stations.

Shatabdi Trains: These trains are very high speed and always between very long distance cities. The fair of ticket in these type of trains are very hing compare to above mentioned trains.

Garib Rath Train: Ah! very luxury train for high class passengers. Only AC3 and high classes are available in these trains.
