As a Laboratory Technician, you will provide a wide range of support to deliver quality analytical services in Water Quality Services (WQS). Primary duties include:
  • Manage sample integrity by utilizing Lab Information Management System (LIMS) operating and maintaining online, field, and analytical lab instruments.
  • Communicate with plant operators, field crews, and contractors.
  • Analyze water, wastewater, and stormwater samples for a variety of regulatory parameters, such as: pH, nutrients, alkalinity, and solids as an example.
  • Follow laboratory quality practices and maintain accurate records in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)/ International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 17025 standard.
  • Perform other laboratory support duties, such as: solution preparation, cleaning glassware, ordering chemical supplies, and preparing sample bottles.
Qualifications
  • A completed 2 year technical diploma in Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in an environmental or water laboratory accredited to ISO17025 standards.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits, or a Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, with no current suspensions or charges pending.
  • Proven organizational, analytical and communication skills and intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office are essential for success in this role.
  • Experience with advanced analytical instrumentation and plant process related analysis would be considered assets.
Working Conditions: This position is exposed to chemicals, compressed gases and infectious micro-organisms. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required.
Pre-employment Requirements
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator’s permit
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
