Job Description
The Manager of Western LTL Operations is accountable for the daily functions and ongoing growth and development of Bison’s Less Than Truckload (LTL) Division. The primary focus of this position is to ensure the LTL Division meets company goals in profitability, cost control, customer volumes, and level of service.
The Manager will collaborate with the other leaders of our Operations, Intermodal, Logistics, Pricing, Warehousing, and Administration teams to effectively execute outlined strategy. The Manager is responsible for understanding our regional truckload operation and identifying constraints and synergies that would affect LTL’s day-to-day operation. The Manager will be a strong people leader with a direct focus on identifying and developing talent in the Western region.
Key responsibilities include:
- Ongoing recorded evaluation of employees’ performance and providing information necessary to contribute to the employee’s performance evaluation,
- Communicating employee performance to the employee,
- Leading performance management initiatives for assigned staff,
- Continuous focus on employee development including performance reviews, scorecards, and Individual Development Plans (IDP),
- Identify and support the one-up and two-up leadership mindset with a focus on Ready Now and Ready next leadership potential within teams,
- Organizing and identifying general and specific training of all new and current LTL operations staff including new staff as per the training schedule and ongoing training for current staff as scenarios arise, or as they are identified,
- Ensuring staff have a clear understanding of their job descriptions, expectations, policies, and procedures as well as goals/programs,
- Managing time off and staffing coverage when needed,
- Interviewing and hiring office employees,
- Participates in infrastructure planning, analytics support, and growth opportunity identification that aligns with organizational goals,
- Participates in partner carrier engagement, carrier network growth, carrier cost negotiations, and new lane champion,
- Acts as lead Operations consult on Western Region Sales,
- Ensures there is LTL alignment that supports the strategies of other departments including highway, City, Warehouse, and Customer Service,
- Evaluates LTL’s key performance indicators to build and lead operational strategies toward short- and long-term business growth,
- Keep up-to-date on competitive and industry challenges,
- Understanding the workload and responsibilities of LTL staff in all regions ensuring required support is available when required ie. Adjusting part-time hours for peak times,
- Provides escalation support to direct reports and other stakeholders.
