ABOUT THE ROLE

TransAlta is currently seeking to fill the position of “Co-op Student Technical Services” in our Technical Shared services team. This team provides technical supports to all types of fuel generating assets and business development across Australia, Canada, and the US.

This role provides the successful applicant with exposure to established asset management technologies, and the opportunity to utilize and expand upon existing knowledge of information technology and data manipulation tools. Day-to-day activities for this role will involve collection and analysis of maintenance and online equipment monitoring data from specific sites/plants and reporting analysis results. This work allows the company to understand the condition of major equipment. As part of this work the successful applicant will upgrade the Asset Health Index tool for transformer AHI reporting.

This will be an approximately 8-month position and is in Calgary either hybrid or full time in the office. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Collect offline transformer maintenance reports from the specified sites/plants
  • Retrieve data from transformer online dissolved-gas-analysis (DGA) monitor and bushing monitor from the specified sites/plants
  • Input the collected data into the transformer AHI tool and perform the technical analysis
  • Report the suspicious issues identified to the Electrical Principal Engineer
  • Work with different team members and be able to self-manage different requests with minimum supervision
  • Provide Support to team members related to technical and other administrative tasks

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following must-have qualifications and experience:

  • Enrolled in a certificate, diploma or degree program with a focus in Electrical Engineering, or appropriate area of focus.
  • Must be registered as a full-time or part-time student in a post-secondary institution and be returning to studies following this placement
  • Strong academic performance as evidenced by your GPA.
  • A sound knowledge about major electrical equipment, particularly on transformers and relays
  • Strong computer skills, with advanced Microsoft Excel, Excel VBA, and programming skills (preference for Python experience)
  • Self-driven and able to work remotely or from the office
  • Strong communication skills with ability to summarize and clearly communicate technical information.
  • A results-oriented approach to work.
  • Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple work tasks.
  • Positive attitude and a willingness to learn and take initiative.

The following qualifications and/or experience are desirable, but not essential:

  • Prior work experience obtained through internship, coop or summer jobs
