Your role

Reporting to the Director, of Real Estate Lending, The Analyst Intern, Real Estate Lending will be introduced to the stimulating and challenging career of commercial real estate debt and will assist the Real Estate Lending – Interim Loans Team in their day-to-day operations.

The Analyst Intern will learn what is required for the Real Estate Lending – Interim Loans Team to meet and exceed mortgage investment objectives for commercial mortgage construction loans and what is required as part of the ongoing monitoring and administration of commercial mortgage construction loans in both Canada and the US.

Under the tutelage of the relationship managers and analysts, the Analyst Intern will be exposed to (i) the property and loan underwriting analysis process, (ii) the loan application and approval submission process for a broad spectrum of loans, (iii) the ongoing monitoring, funding, and reporting process and (iv) the closing and due diligence process. The successful candidate for this position will be required to operate independently and as part of the team in a high-volume and fast-paced environment whilst adhering to strict deadlines.

The objective of the internship is to develop a good understanding and business sense of the commercial real estate debt industry. Depending on the performance of the Analyst Intern and subject to the availability of a suitable role, this internship may potentially lead to a full-time opportunity or a second internship with the Real Estate Lending – Interim Loans Team.

Your Responsibilities

  • Assist in the underwriting of new opportunities and assist in the preparation of comprehensive narrative and analytical credit submissions for large and complex loans;
  • Assist in competing for due diligence including market reviews, condominium sales reviews, project budget reviews, lease reviews, borrower and guarantor financial statement analysis, and review of property reports (appraisal, environmental and geotechnical);
  • Assist in the asset management and completion of annual reviews for the existing mortgage portfolio, due diligence for loan closings, and update mortgage administration system;
  • Assist in processing and obtaining the necessary internal approvals for various borrower requests (amendments to loan structure (i.e. sources and uses, loan term extensions, partial discharges, etc.);
  • Assist in the preparation/validation of various internal reports;
  • Assist in ad-hoc projects that will improve the overall team’s efficiencies (i.e. underwriting templates, market data sharing, etc.)

Your Profile

  • Third-year student working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, or Real Estate is an asset;
  • A High level of energy and a keen desire to learn new concepts;
  • A clearly defined interest in commercial real estate lending;
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and commitment to learning and willingness to contribute to the team;
  • Self-starter and independent learner;
  • Excellent Excel skills;
  • Proficiency in Outlook, Word;
  • Strong analytical, research, and quantitative skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to work on several concurrent projects with strict deadlines;
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills;
  • Self-motivated with a high degree of integrity, honesty, and ethics.
