General Manager

POSITION SUMMARY
The General Manager (GM) leads a diverse team of employees that perform a variety of duties to ensure the hotel, bar, and beer vendor is operating safely, efficiently, and effectively. The GM is involved in all aspects of the business and is a key point of contact for all employees, vendors, customers, contractors, and government officials.
POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Inventory Management
- Count/scan beer vendor and bar stock inventory on a daily basis and reconcile with sales from the previous day.
- Enter sales and inventory on a spreadsheet then analyze discrepancies and determine reasons for variances – make corrections and advise the owner of major discrepancies.
- Replenish stock by submitting orders to vendors to meet minimum stock levels.
- Receive stock and sign bill of lading to confirm the accuracy of the order received, noting any back ordered items to ensure they are received at a later date.
- Approve invoices for payment once the stock has been received.
- Prepare and reconcile monthly sales reports to obtain vendor totals.
- Handle any Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries (MBLL) inquiries.
- Maintain a good working relationship with vendors and inspectors.
- Meet with vendors to discuss promotions and video display requirements.
- Order building maintenance supplies as needed, then approve invoices for payment.
Building Management
- Ensure the safety of all visitors, employees, and contractors on site, and their compliance with hotel or government rules and regulations.
- Inspect the building, property, and equipment to ensure it is clean, safe, and in good repair.
- Perform regular maintenance or contact service companies/contractors to repair the building, property, or equipment as required.
- Seek approval for work over $1,000 from the owner and obtain additional quotes if requested.
- Work with contractors to ensure all work is completed in a safe and satisfactory manner in accordance with Manitoba laws.
- Supervise projects and approve invoices for payment when work is completed. Hold back funds if deficiencies are noted that need to be corrected.
- Assistant the owner is obtaining building and zoning permits as required.
- Assist with building, safety, and licensing inspections by government offices and immediately advise the owner of any violations (MBLL, City of Winnipeg, Manitoba Fire Commissioner’s Office, Workplace Safety and Health, etc.).
- Discuss options to address violations with the respective inspector and owner. Then hire service companies or contractors to fix the problem.
- Communicate with customers, tenants, guests, vendors, or neighbors to address their complaints.
- Maintain a good working relationship with suppliers, service providers, and contractors.
Financial Management
- Gather invoices, receipts, and reports to send to the accountant to prepare the monthly financial statements.
- Answer any questions and provide additional information when requested.
Human Resource Management
- Assist with the recruitment of employees.
- Train and mentor employees as required.
- Oversee employee performance and provide regular feedback, documenting any major or repeated performance issues for the employee file.
- Advise the owner of any employee issues beyond the scope of the position (i.e., termination).
- Provide training to your successor or backup employee.
- Maintain a good working relationship with management and employees to address any concerns.
Other Duties as Assigned:
- Report any employee, vendor, customer, or government complaint/issues to the owner.
- Report any issues beyond the scope of the position such as policy non-compliance or criminal activity to management.
- Assist Winnipeg Police with incidents that took place on the property or surrounding area, and provide evidence when requested.
- Refer any media requests or highly sensitive/confidential public inquiries to the owner.
- Maintain confidentiality of all business operations throughout and beyond employment.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Post-secondary education in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 3+ years managing hotel operations and maintaining buildings, property, and equipment.
Experience
- Experienced handyperson with the ability to fix minor repairs and perform routine maintenance.
- Experience managing building systems and working with contractors and service personnel.
- Experience managing construction and maintenance projects.
- Experience dealing with government officials and representing the organization.
- Experience managing inventory and ordering supplies.
- Experience leading and supervising employees and addressing performance issues.
- Experience using computers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook or other email software)

- Able to oversee all hotel operations in the owner’s absence.
- Able to represent the hotel in a professional, respectful and knowledgeable manner.
- Strong customer service and troubleshooting skills.

- Knowledge of Winnipeg and Manitoba building and safety codes.
- Knowledge of liquor and lottery licensing requirements with Smart Choices Certification.
- Knowledge of Manitoba employment, health, and safety legislation.
- Must possess a positive attitude with a strong work ethic.
- Physically able to perform the duties of the position.
- Able to work a flexible work schedule, including evenings or weekends.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to legally work in Canada.
- Must pass a Criminal Record Check.
