Merriam Music
UKULELE TEACHER
Ukulele has experienced periods of popularity over the last 100 years, and none more than the last 10 years, where almost every other commercial and background track contains a happy-go-lucky ukulele sample.
But Ukulele is also capable of extreme levels of fitness and virtuosity. Here at Merriam, we have a wide variety of students in our music studio who are wanting to learn more about the instrument.
It’s become a popular musical instrument for early music education because of its low cost, portability, and relative simplicity.
We’re seeking ukulele instructors who can inspire, with a deep love and knowledge of music theory, an appreciation for the wide range of musical genres that ukulele can participate in, and a keen interest as well in maintaining their own musical journey.
Here at Merriam you’ll join our team of pros, and foster your own career at the same time. You’ll have the opportunity to advance within the school and play increasingly important roles in helping to shape students’ lives and the future of the school.
A ukulele instructor position at Merriam is evidence that a “music teacher job” doesn’t need to be part-time, temporary, or unfulfilling. In fact, it’s entirely the opposite, and to learn more, we hope that you’ll apply to join our team.
Job Responsibilities
Ukulele Teachers
We welcome all styles of ukuleleist to apply: whether you’re purely classical, have been fiddling since 3, plug-in for electric stylings a la Trans Siberian Orchestra, or a little jazz in the style of Stéphane Grappelli.
And, we’re seeking out two very unique and valuable types of ukulele teachers for our school: full and part-time core instructors for both in-person and online teaching, and professional performers who connect less frequently but with high impact.
Firstly, our academy of music is built upon the long-term commitment of our teaching staff. Many of our core teachers have been with the school for over a decade, and our most engaged and successful teachers consider this a professional home and a place to foster their careers.
But additionally, we are also seeking professional performers with active music-industry careers who find satisfaction in sharing their knowledge and enhancing their income in a flexible, credible way. These artists act as adjudicators, guest lecturers, course contributors, remote coaches for elite students, and content contributors.
Our teachers hail from throughout the GTA, including Etobicoke, Markham, Richmond Hill, North York, Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga, Toronto, Vaughan, Brampton, Scarborough, and more. As we expand online, however, we’d love to hear from you regardless of where you are, from Dartmouth to Brantford, Guelph to Gatineau, Alberta to Quebec, Stouffville to Saskatoon, Port Coquitlam to Port Dover.
Regardless of what job type you apply for, the age group of the students, your past job titles, or whether you have a bachelor’s degree or doctorate from a top music program, we value musicianship (not necessarily virtuosity) and a genuine connection with educating above all else. Successful candidates will have post-secondary education, except where recognized success in the music industry or exceptional prior teaching experience provides a similar depth of knowledge.
WORKING AT MERRIAM

Whether that be mentoring and coaching so that you can achieve maximum job success, or being responsive to personal needs and challenges, our employees are the strength of our business, and we treat you as such.
And finally, you’ll be heard. Ideas are welcomed and encouraged, and the best ideas are adopted regardless of who and where they come from. We all succeed when everyone is supported fairly and genuinely – and you’ll feel it from day one.
