Our Utility department is looking for safety-minded and responsible team players who enjoy good honest work that provides a solid sense of accomplishment. We are expanding our team and need temporary full-time laborers. Laborers are the starting point where our staff gets on-the-job training which then puts them in a position to compete for other positions such as pipefitters, equipment operators, trades workers, truck drivers, or crew supervisors. Many of our full-time staff began work as temporary laborers and it is an excellent opportunity to see if a career in public service is for you.
Laborers join a team and perform manual outside work entailing physical effort in performing unskilled and semi-skilled operations, maintenance, and construction tasks on our water, sewer, and storm systems. Work assignments can include, working with a crew constructing water mains and water and sewer service connections, assisting in inspecting water and sewer systems, reading and repairing water meters and pumps, water pressure regulators, and fire hydrants, and assisting in locating and repairing leaks in water mains and water services, assisting in sewer system cleaning, flushing, and rodding tasks, assisting in installing and repairing water valves, assisting in responding and troubleshooting customers concerns and emergency response.
The successful applicant must possess:
- The physical and mental aptitude to work on a crew and learn new skills;
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in repair, maintenance, and pipe construction work and some experience using a variety of hand tools;
- The ability to perform a variety of maintenance and construction-related tasks;
- The ability to carry out oral and written instruction and exercise some independent judgment,
- Skill in the operation of related tools and equipment and light or medium trucks;
- Mechanical aptitude and physically able to perform heavy manual work in all types of weather.
We are looking for people that have a high school diploma and some experience in construction and maintenance work, or have an equivalent combination of training and experience. EOCP Water Distribution 1 and Sanitary Collection System 1 certification would be considered an asset. A valid Class 5 B.C. A driver’s Licence and an abstract that reflects a safe driving record are required, along with the ability to be available to accept overtime and respond to after-hour emergency calls as required. The wage rate for these unionized positions is $29.00 per hour based on a 40-hour work week.
