We are looking for a Wildlife Ranger to join our team here at Auckland Airport. This role is 3 days per week, 13-hour shifts, on bi-weekly set rosters.


Your key responsibilities are:

  • Manage the risks posed by the presence of birds, other wildlife, and domestic animals in accordance with the policies and procedures in the Auckland Airport Operational manuals to a level that ensures compliance with CAA part 139 regulations.
  • Conduct audits by Quality Assurance Manager, Civil Aviation Authority, and Grounds & Wildlife Hazard Management Planner to determine that there are no areas of concern and carry out patrolling duties as rostered.
  • Using harassment techniques to deter the presence of birds, other wildlife, and domestic animals within the airside environs that may pose a safety threat to aviation.
  • Ensure threats to the safety of aviation are addressed in a timely manner and according to best management practices.  For example, but not limited to, scaring poisoning, or shooting.
  • Insects, weeds, and grasses that could attract birds or animals, are monitored so that action can be taken before problems occur.  Should it be necessary for insect, weed, and grass management/ chemical control undertaken, as necessary?
  • Ensure that bird counts and daily patrols are carried out as per the program.
  • Report any issues regarding Airside and Airside maintenance and ensure these are sent to the relevant departments, for example, but not limited to oil spills, insecure gates, and damage to fences or signs.
  • Bird populations are regularly monitored and graphed.  Results, reports, and appropriate recommendations to be made to the Grounds & Wildlife Hazard Management Planner.
  • All firearms, ammunition, and bird harassment equipment are accounted for and in good order. Problems were promptly reported to Wildlife Hazard Management Planner.
  • Audits of Wildlife Hazard operations show compliance with all relevant regulations and procedures, including but not limited to training, annual assessment, and safety equipment.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Firearms License.
  • Full New Zealand Driver’s License and 4W driving experience.
  • Wildlife behavior knowledge and weed and insect identification skills.
  • Background in the ecosystem, turf, open space, wildlife, pest management, or farming management.
  • Have the ability to work in a team, but also autonomously.
  • Entitled to legally work in NZ.
